Caragh Celtic 6
Naas United 0

The waiting is finally over for Caragh’s under 8s as they made their KDUL league debut against Naas United on a glorious morning on the Monread Road in Naas.

The game started brightly with both teams looking for the early breakthrough but the Caragh boys quickly took control of the game and applied relentless pressure on their smaller opponents.

Caragh Celtic break out from defense in numbers

Caragh got their breakthrough after 5 minutes when Brian Merrigan won possession in the Naas defence and slid a beautiful pass down the left wing to Mikey Coffey. Mikey ran on to the pass and with one look up unselfishly played the ball through to Daniel Hamill who was clear in on the Naas goals. Daniel didn’t need a second invitation as he picked his spot and gave the Naas goalkeeper no chance with a well placed shot to the left corner of the Naas goal.

Shortly after the restart Naas surrendered possession to Caragh 20 yards in front of their own goals, Caragh again punished the mistake, when a Mikey Coffey shot from the edge of the area crept over the Naas line despite a brave effort from the Naas goalkeeper. The first quarter finished with Caragh leading 2-0.

The 2nd quarter continued in much the same vein as the first with Caragh well on top in all areas of the pitch. Any sign of a Naas breakthrough were quickly smothered out with tigerish tackling of Caolan O’Toole, Ross Ward and Daire Gilmartin in the Caragh defense.

Midway through the 2nd quarter Caragh extended their lead further when Evan Gilmartin played a defense splitting pass that found his brother Daire who ran on to it and bravely slid in to finish to the corner of the net to make it 3-0 to Caragh.

Then as the 2nd quarter was drawing to a close Mikey Coffey scored the goal of the game with a wonderful individual effort. Mikey got the ball out on the right touch line and carried it in towards the goal beating one defender before placing a wonderful curling shot with his left foot to the top corner of the Naas net giving the goalkeeper absolutely no chance.

The 3rd quarter was a much closer affair as the Naas team started to come in to the game a bit more. But the Caragh lads were in no mood for giving away anything today and snuffed out any threat to their goals with some robust tackling.

dribbling, but the Caragh boys saw the danger everytime and hunted the opposition down in packs, with Ben Morrell, Aaron Conway, Adam Fleming and Adam Carberry all playing their part for the team.

As the 3rd quarter drew to a close Caragh again created an opportunity for themselves and once more it fell to Daniel Hamill who made no mistake from close range to make it 5-0 to Caragh.

Daniel Hamill then gave up his opportunity of an opening day hat-trick though as he volunteered himself to go in goals for the final quarter.

In the last ten minutes you could see the confidence grow in the Caragh boys as everyone wanted the ball. Aaron Conway was unlucky not to break through on goals on a couple of occasions only for some last ditch Naas defending putting a stop to some of his mazy dribbles.

Brian Merrigan was a bundle of energy throughout the game and must have covered every blade of grass of the Monread pitch. Brian, who was captain for the day for Caragh, finished the game in style when he won himself a free-kick on the edge of the Naas area. Brian got up, dusted himself down and calmy slotted a wonderful free kick to the back of the Naas net to finish the scoring for the day.

A fine all round performance from all the Caragh boys where everyone played their part.
