Caragh Celtic 2
Kill Celtic 0
We travelled to Kill on Saturday last to take on a Kill Celtic team that had beaten us on every occassion last season. So it was a really interesting game to finish off the season with to see how much the lads have progressed this season.
Kill tore in to us from the off and with the wind and hill at their backs it looked like it was going to be a really tough challenge for us to keep them at bay.
The first quarter was a real rearguard action from Caragh with our goal living a charmed life on a number of occassions with goal line clearances and last ditch tackles being the order of the day. With Conor Cassidy in goals for this quarter we made it to the break without conceding although the crossbar did take a good smack.
The second quarter was more of the same from Kill but our lads were now getting to grips with the challenge and our defending became more composed. Caolan in particular led by example with no quarter being given to his opponents. Kill did strike the post though with another fine shot and Caolan managed to block away the follow up effort to keep it scoreless as half time approached.
The second half saw us really start to come in to the game when we had the benefit of the hill and wind. Ross and Noah started posing problems for Kill down the wings, while Cian and Daire took charge in the centre. Caragh broke the deadlock with a really calm finish from Cian from the edge of the area following a strong run from midfield. Any thoughts though that the job was done were short lived as Conor McCall was called in to action straight away at the other end to save another effort on goal from Kill.
Going in to the final quarter the game was on a knife edge with Kill pushing for an equaliser with Caragh defending brilliantly and breaking quickly. Cian helped save Conor’s blushes in goals and kept his clean sheet in tact with a miraculous goal line block when two Kill players looked certain to equalise.
Evan and Cian swept up everything else that came their way at the back in this final quarter and the goal that sealed our win came from great defensive work from Evan. Evan worked really hard to win back possession on the edge of our area and turned and released Noah on the right wing. Noah took off on a really strong run down the wing and swung over a vicious cross that got the better of the Kill keeper and found the back of the net to seal our win.
The lads really rose to the challenge today and the work rate and hunger they showed to keep our 2014 unbeaten record in tact was fantastic. This was a great game of under 9 football with both teams showing fantastic skill levels and great sporting spirit – well done to all involved and we look forward to facing more challenges like this one!!
