Newbridge Town 2
Caragh Celtic 4
Caragh travelled to Newbridge and were given a really tough test this time round from the Newbridge boys. Caragh won the home fixture against Newbridge comfortably but this game was a completely different kettle of fish with the result in doubt right to the final whistle.
Caragh openend the scoring midway through the first quarter following good work down the right by Daniel Hamill the ball found it’s way to Mikey Coffey in the Newbridge area and Mikey finished smartly to the corner of the Newbridge net.
For the rest of the first half though all the pressure and chances came at the other end with Newbridge dominating the game. The Caragh lads showed some excellent defending skill in this game with brave blocks and last ditch tackles being the order of the day.
Caolan O’Toole and Daire Gilmartin demonstrated these skills on numerous occassions as the half progressed. But the Newbridge pressure finally paid off when they managed to convert a couple of the chances that their pressure deserved to go in to the half time break 2-1 to the good.
The large Newbridge pitch was proving a real challenge to the Caragh lads to get used to, but slowly they started to expand their play and take advantage of all the space that was available on this ground.
Caragh finally got back on level terms when pure persistance from Caolan in front of the Newbridge goal paid off and he managed to win back the ball following a corner and the ball found its way to Daire who managed to scramble home from close range.
The final quarter was a real ding dong affair with both teams chasing the win. It was Caragh though who finally got their noses in front when a break involving Noah Byrne and Evan Gilmartin, ended up with a chance falling to Evan just inside the Newbridge area and Evan made no mistake with his finish.
Newbridge threw everything forward now and were caught short at the back. Caolan in goals for Caragh collected a Newbridge cross and thinking fast spotted and found Ross with a quick clearance. Ross collected the ball on the half way and ran through and finished cooly to make it 4-2 to Caragh at the final whistle.
Overall a good performance from Caragh, with our defence being outstanding in the first half and the second half saw our attacking qualities coming to the fore. Conor McCall showed some great touches when playing outfield in the final quarter and always seemed to find a team mate with his passing. Caolan was ever dependable at the back. Noah and Ross on the wings were a constant threat. Daniel and Mikey worked their socks off for the team. Daire and Evan Gilmartin popped up with crucial goals for us at one end and goal saving tackles at the other.
The team will take a well deserved break now until the New Year. Hopefully will see most of you at the Christmas Quiz. Happy Christmas to all of you and thanks for all your much needed support so far this year.
