U9 Premier Defeated In Monasterevin

Monasterevin AFC 4
Caragh Celtic 3

Caragh faced Monasterevin for the second time this season and came out second best in a seven goal thriller.

Caragh got off to a great start in the first quarter racing in to a two goal lead, with goals coming from Evan and Daire Gilmartin. The second goal from Daire was an absolute cracker of a shot to the top corner of the Monasterevin goal. The passing and movement from the Caragh boys in the first quarter had us all thinking that this was going to be an easy day – but this was to be as good as it got for us unfortunately as Monasterevin came storming back as the game progressed.

After the 1st quarter break it was like two different teams took to the pitch with Monasterevin winning all the battles on the tight home pitch. The direct style of Monasterevin had Caragh under constant pressure and Monasterevin deservedly narrowed the gap to one with a well taken goal just before the half-time break.

The second half saw Daniel Hamill take up the goalkeeping duties for Caragh and Daniel was certainly the busier of the two keepers, pulling off a number of fine saves for us, to keep us in the game. Monasterevin though did eventually draw level with a well placed shot down to Daniels right giving him no chance. Almost straight away though Caragh responded with a fine goal from Cian O’Reilly when his powerful shot from outside the area flew past the home keeper at his near post to restore Caragh’s lead.

Monasterevin though were the hungrier team on the day and really took control of the game from here on. The home side drew level early in the final quarter and pressed on looking for the win. The Caragh goal had a number of close escapes before finally Monasterevin were awarded a penalty in the closing minutes which was slammed confidently to the back of the Caragh net.

The Caragh lads tried in vain to respond and grab an equaliser but it was just one of those days when not a lot went right for our boys and Monasterevin held out for a deserved victory.

Best for Caragh were Daniel, Daire, Ross and Conor.

Caragh: Conor McCall, Daire Gilmartin(Capt), Evan Gilmartin, Ross Ward, Michael Coffey, Conor Cassidy, Noah Byrne, Cian O’Reilly, Caolan O’Toole
