Caragh Celtic 6
Kill Celtic 1
Caragh faced off against one of their toughest rivals over the last couple of seasons in Kill Celtic and while the final score line might look convincing for long stages of this game there was nothing between these two sides.
The first half was a real nip and tuck affair with both teams defences coming out on top. Clear cut chances were few and far between with both keepers dealing with any shots that came their way. Conor Cassidy and Evan in goals for Caragh in the first two quarters did have a couple of scares with one shot coming back off a post and another rebound from an Evan save being spectacularly cleared by Cian. While at the other end the Kill keeper made comfortable saves from Ross and Cian.
Half time came and the game was still scoreless and we really thought whoever got their noses in front here would win the game. The third quarter though really saw Noah take the game by the scruff of the neck. Cian setup Noah on the edge of the area and his first time shot found the roof of the Kill net despite the best efforts of a Kill defender to deflect away. But no sooner did we go in front that we made a defensive slip and Kill replied straightaway to make it 1-1.
The chances started coming thick and fast now though for Caragh and we went back in the lead almost straight from the tip off. Conor Cassidy took a shot that proved too hot to handle for the Kill keeper and Noah was there to pick up the pieces and blasted the rebound home.
The next goal would really settle the tie and it was Caragh who got it when Daire created a shooting opportunity for himself on the edge of the Kill area and he found the target despite the gallant efforts of the visiting keeper. This two goal cushion really saw the Caragh boys take charge of the game for the remainder of the third quarter. Noah completed his hat trick with a vicious cross shot that flew into the bottom corner of the Kill goal to make it 4-1 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
The fourth quarter saw Kill throw caution to the wind and the Caragh boys were quite happy to soak up the pressure and hit them on the break. Caragh were to get a further two goals on the break through Mikey. At the back Caolan had a storming game for us using his strength and good defensive positional sense to break up countless Kill attacks.
But even when the defence was breached Conor McCall was in excellent form between the sticks making two wonderful saves for his team. Conor also showed that what we work on in training comes into the games when Conor Cassidy played a backpass to him while under pressure and we kept the ball comfortably and played it back out from the back despite giving your coach a heart attack!!
Another excellent all round performance from the boys showing how much we’ve improved when we can beat a team like Kill in this style where we always previously struggled against them.
