First home win for Caragh Girls

Caragh Celtic 5
Moone Celtic 3

Moone Celtic were the visitors to the parish field today, a blustery wet day making conditions difficult for football. The visitors started strongly and were quickly out of the blocks when a nice attacking move down the left saw them take the first score on five minutes. Our girls kept their composure though and were soon starting to gel. Early nerves were shed and some slick passing and running on and off the ball were to see Caragh gaining the upper hand in a hard fought match.

Our forward pairing of Orlagh Fitzpatrick and Leah McGovern were on fine attacking form today and on ten minutes Orlagh shot just wide to the left, hitting the side netting. Very soon after she actually had the ball in the net, cutting in from the left with a jinking run but unfortunately prior to this the ball had just crossed the end line so the goal was not allowed stand.

Orlagh’s persistance was to pay off though and on twenty minutes the girls were level when she saw her beautifully struck left footed shot fly straight into the top right hand corner of the Moone net. Caragh were well on top now with shots from Sarah McGovern and Grace Kielty both going just wide. Sarah was to put us in front when she added to the scoring after she nestled a well taken goal into the bottom left hand corner past the Moone keeper. Caragh finished the half strongly and had even more chances to extend their lead when Leah Fleming had a shot saved and Orlagh again hit the side netting.

The second half had only just started and with the girls just getting into position Moone took full advantage and scored from the kick off. Just like the first half though Caraghs fighting spirit was to see them again gain the upper hand. The midfield of Anna O’Donovan, Eimear Ward, Lauren Nolan and Leah Fleming worked their socks off today and played some lovely football while chasing every loose ball down.

When under pressure from Moones attack the defence of Sally Kielty, Grace Kielty, Aoife Ryan Honor O’Donovan and Ellie Murphy was steadfast and soaked up all that Moone could throw at them in front of Anna Dunlea in Goal. Within a few minutes Caragh were ahead again. A Moone handball on the edge of the area gave Orlagh the chance to put her free taking skills to good effect and her beautifully floated shot sailed into the top of the net.

At times Moone were able to apply plenty of pressure and Anna Dunlea who had a great game kept them at bay, first off saving a shot from a corner and again soon after saving a well struck shot with her feet to keep us ahead. Caragh pulled even further ahead when Leah Fleming put herself on the score sheet, her persistance up front paid off when Sarah’s parried shot fell to her and running onto the ball she struck the ball low and hard into the bottom left hand corner of the oppositions net with a very well taken goal chance.

Caragh went on to score another eight minutes from the end when Sarah again hit a well struck shot that was saved and Anna O’Donovan was on hand and keeping her cool stuck the rebound over the line for Caragh’s fifth. Moone scored again in the dying minutes to finish the gane at 5 – 3.

A great team performance today with some lovely football played on a not so lovely day.
