Caragh Celtic 2
Moone Celtic 5
Moone Celtic were the visitors to the parish field today on what was a grey dull overcast day.
Our girls began brightly and had the majority of the possession throughout the first half. On five minutes Anna O’Donovan was the first to let fly and fired a venomous shot just left and wide of the mark. Aoife Kane was to follow suit shortly after but her well struck shot found the side netting, this time just to the right of the opposition goal. Moone had packed their defence and had at least four/five girls marshalling the area in front of their keeper for most of the match making it hard for our forward pairing of Anna O’Donovan and Orlagh Fitzpatrick to find space. Fifteen minutes into the half saw Leah Fleming break through from midfield and seizing on an opportunity struck the ball well but unfortunatley the shot was straight at the Moone keeper who gathered well. The girls were piling on the pressure at this stage and the team had moved up the pitch in support. This was to make room behind the defence which Moone then exploited twice and went on to score on the break against the run of play first on 20 minutes and then again on 22 minutes. They were to score again with 26 minutes on the clock. The three away goals came in quick succession two of which were totally against the run of play. Orlagh Fitzpatrick was to give us a glimmer of hope in the dying minutes of the first half. Firstly combining with Anna O’Donovan and finishing well to put the ball in the back of the opposition net to make the score 1 – 3, then placing an expertly taken well deserved penalty to the top right corner past the Moone keeper to make it 2 – 3 to finish the half.
The second half was to continue much in the same vein and even though Moone had edged themselves more into the game as the match progressed our girls still had the majority of possession. The midfield of Leah Fleming, Sarah and Leah McGovern, Aoife Kane and Maeve Magner played very well today and were great going forward, helping to heap the pressure on the Moone defence. Our defensive line up of Lauren Nolan, Ellie Murphy, Honor O’Donovan, Eva Niskonen and Eimear Ward played their hearts out in support of their team and were unlucky at times to have been caught out when they were. The best chances of the second half were to fall to Aoife Kane. Firstly combining well with Eva Niskonen with some nice football played down the left side of the pitch, the result of which almost forced an own goal. She then went on to hit the post from a corner over on the right and then was unlucky to see her beautifully floated shot from outside the box headed over just as it sailed towards the top left corner. Once again against the run of play, one of the Moone forwards found herself in the clear from a Caragh kickout and scored a well taken goal past Anna Dunlea who played well in goal today.
Moone scored again in the dying minutes to make it 2 – 5 in a game where the girls had plenty of possesion and time on the ball but unfortunately little end product against a well organised strong defence.
