Caragh Celtic U13 Girls Team Make League Debut

Sallins Celtic 4

Caragh Celtic 1

Another first for Caragh Celtic today with our first ever girls team kicking off their league campaign with an away trip to Sallins.  With just two training sessions completed the girls were raring to get a match under their belts.

The Caragh team are a very young bunch for this age group with quite a few actually still under 11 and they were really up against it against a very big and strong Sallins outfit who already have a couple of seasons of soccer experience.

The Caragh girls weren’t a bit overawed by the challenge in Salllins though and gave a great account of themselves today.

Anna Dunlea in goals for the first half made a string of fine saves for Caragh to keep the score down.  While Sally Kielty, Eimear Ward and Lauren Nolan at the back for Caragh tackled and blocked everything that came their way.

Anna O’Donovan worked tirelessly in the middle of midfield and showed some lovely touches linking up with her midfield team mates Orlagh Fitzpatrick and Sarah McGovern. While upfront Leah McGovern and Aoife Ryan both ran their socks off for their team.

Caragh went in at half time trailing 2-0.  The second half saw Grace Kielty, who was unable to play outfield due to injury, take over from Anna in goals.  The Caragh girls all improved as the game went on and started to make a few chances of their own while Sallins still looked very dangerous every time they came forward.

Sallins stretched their lead to 4-0 but Caragh never gave up and we kept searching for that 1st elusive goal for our new team.  Sarah, Sally, Orlagh and Leah all showed great skill in looking to create openings and all that hard work was eventually rewarded in the last minute of the game when we earned a free kick on the edge of the Sallins area. Orlagh stepped up to take the free and struck a left foot shot that found the back of the net via the post to give us a hard earned goal.

All the girls can be really proud of their performance, and let’s hope everyone enjoyed themselves and will keep it up.
