Away victory for Caragh Girls vs Sallins

Sallins Celtic 2
Caragh Celtic 3

Sallins Celtic were the opposition today on a bright cold day, conditions were good for a match and this was again going to be another difficult away test for the girls, Sallins are always a strong, experienced and well organised oppostion and the last time we played each other both teams produced a great game of football with Caragh just losing out in the dying minutes.

However, this time was to be different. Our girls were quickly on the attack from the kick off and had the ball in the net practically from the blow of the referees whistle. Aoife Kane capitalising when running onto a deflected shot from Leah Fleming she expertly slotted the ball into the back of the net with barely a minute played. 0 – 1.

Our forward combination today of Leah Fleming and Leah McGovern were to have a handful of decent chances n the first half. Leah Fleming came close five minutes in when she had a  shot fizz past the left hand upright. She was getting closer to the mark each time and scored a geat goal a few minutes later with just ten minutes played   A play from a corner had the opposition under pressure and when the ball came to Leah in the box she let it run across her path then turned and hit a lovely shot low and to the right past the oppostion keeper to make the score 0 – 2.

The midfield of Sarah McGovern Lauren Nolan and Aoife Kane helped pile on the pressure with some lovely dribbling and passing today supplying plenty of excellent passes to Leah Fleming who pounced again for another goal when she saw her well struck shot from the very edge of the box hit the back of the net to make it 0 – 3. Nothing the Sallins keeper could to do keep it out,

Our girls didn’t exactly have it all their own way in the first half but Sallins attacks were kept to a mininum by Honor O’Donovan and Eimear Ward who were steadfast today in defence. There was nothing that they or Anna Dunlea in goal could do when Sallins broke the line with a lovely through pass and a great run from their forward finished in a goal with just minutes to half time. This finished the half at 1 – 3 in favour of Caragh.

Our girls began brightly again in the second half and Aoife Kane and Leah Fleming traded shots early on. The best chance of the half was to fall to Leah Fleming when a lovely through pass from Aoife saw her clean through on goal. Unfortunatley her shot was just past the outside of the right hand post. She then went on to rattle the same post a few minutes later with another well struck shot.

Sallins came more into the game as it progressed. Fresh legs at half time and a failure for Caragh to capitaise on possession saw them edge even closer when a contested throw in caught the girls napping and when it as taken quickly the Sallins forward was clean though on goal and had the ball in the back of the net before our defence could catch up. 2 – 3.

There was to be an exciting finish to the game as with only five minutes to play the girls were to be under pressure for most of them and the nerves had most definitely started to set in. Anna Dunlea had a great reflex save late on with her leg to put the ball out for an opposition corner in the dying minutes and Honor and Eimear were to battle hard in defence linking up with Lauren and Aoife whenever they could to help ease the pressure. Everybody played their hearts out in the last minute or two to keep the oppostion from scoring and the game ended 2 – 3.

A great performance and a great victory from an understrength squad today with everybody playing their part in what was a well deserved win.
