Away day success for Caragh Girls

Rathangan 1
Caragh Celtic 5

Rathangan welcomed us again on what was to be another blustery, windy day. The Caragh girls, playing against a strong headwind were quick out of the blocks once again. With just two minutes played, Leah McGovern kept her cool and making the most of an excellent through ball finished low past the opposition keeper, finding the bottom right hand corner of the net.

Chances were to be scarce enough in the first half for our forward line of Aoife Ryan and Leah McGovern. Just before midway through the half Sarah McGovern breaking through from the right side of midfield saw her shot fizz across the oppostion goal just to the left of the post. The weather being a major factor saw the game being mostly played around the middle third of the pitch with the midfield of Leah Fleming, Grace Kielty, Sarah McGovern and Anna O’Donovan having plenty to do.

The defence was steadfast when needed with Sally Kielty, Ellie Murphy, Honor O’Donovan and Eimear Ward keeping the opposition attack quiet enough in front of Anna Dunlea in goal. The pressure was on Rathangan towards the end of the first half, and well taken corners saw a couple of half chances fall to Grace Kielty but Caragh were unable to capitalise.

The second half was to be a different story altogether. The wind was now at the girls backs and they were to use this to great advantage. With excellent teamwork, some slick passing and great running off the ball their sights were soon fixed firmly on goal. Anna O’Donovan saw a goalbound shot ricochet off of a defenders leg and soon after Leah McGovern had her goalward header saved.

Sarah McGovern was getting closer with every chance. A couple of minutes after having another shot go just wide of the target she was to hit the mark. Her persistance payed off when an excellent through ball from sister Leah reached her and her shot smashed into the top right hand corner of the net. A few minutes later Anna O’Donovan was on the score sheet coming forward from midfield and hitting the net with a very well taken goal. The opposition team were well and truly on the backfoot now and Leah Fleming capitalising on defensive error took her chance very well and netted the ball past the keeper.

A well struck long distance shot from Grace Kielty found the top of the net and rounded off the scoring for Caragh in a match that was certainly a game of two halves. Rathangan scored a consolation goal in the dying seconds of the match . Overall an excellent all round team performance.
